This year I taught the course Introduction to Family Relationships for the first time. I introduced this assignment, which is one of the first assignments that the students do in the course. It is assessing the learning outcome “Map a Family Genogram”. To meet this learning outcome I actually give students three different options of how to map their family: a genogram, eco-map, or tree of life.
The assignment instructions are as follows:
Illustrated Family Diagram
Create a diagram of your family using the information that will be provided in class using one of the following 3 models:
- Genogram
- Tree of Life
- Eco-Map
Use your creativity to highlight one aspect of your family life/history on your diagram. Some examples of aspects to highlight include culture, loss, migration, addiction, relationships, etc.
Include a written rationale of 2-3 pages double spaced explaining
- What and how does your diagram illustrates your family and its history?
- How does your diagram impact how you look at your life at the present moment?
- How could a family diagrams be a useful tool when working with families?
APA style, no references beyond course materials required.
I was really impressed with the depth and insight that came from the students in their assignments. Many students reported learning things about their families and noticing patterns in their families that they did not realize were there before.
Here are some examples* of excellent student work on this assignment.
